The third Monday in January has come to be known as "Blue Monday" and is regarded as the gloomiest day of the year. For 2023, Blue Monday falls on January 16th. However, worry not! We at Hickey’s Pharmacy have put some tips together to help survive the day!

 

January Blues

It is important to note that most people feel sad or low at some stage of their lives, often this feeling can be heightened during winter, when days or shorter, darker & colder. It is important to give yourself some TLC, with a particular focus on self-care. Self-care is one of the most important cornerstones of health and well-being and yet one of the most neglected. Make sure to include some YOU time in your hectic schedule and treat yourself with the same kindness and respect that you would show to friends and family.

Self-care tip 1: Get Exercising

Regular physical activity can help you to sleep, relax and feel better. It can help reduce stress and boosts your energy levels. Try aim to do at least 30 minutes of psychical activity a day, whether this be a walk in the park, a gym session, a home workout, or a new sport!

Self-care tip 2: Get a goodnights sleep

Sleep is so important for your mental health. Not only does it help you to think clearly, but it also gives you the energy to deal with problems. Try to aim for at least 8 hours of sleep per night and avoid using blue light devices 2-3 hours before bed.

Self-care tip 3: Establish a routine

Establish a daily routine and plan time and activities for the day ahead. Enforcing routine can help reduce stress by making the day or situation more controllable and predictable.

Self-care tip 4: Improve your diet

Food and drink can also affect moods and emotions. It is recommended to eat a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, in addition to drinking lots of water. If you find yourself suffering from a low mood often, it is also recommended to avoid alcohol.

 

Don’t forget to treat yourself!
