Top 10 Skincare Tips for Winter
Winter can be a tough time for our skin. The cold, dry weather and wind can flare-up sensitive and dry skin. Even normal skin can feel the effects of the winter. It’s important to look after your skin during these months to help nourish and protect yourself from the elements.
Here are our top 10 tips to help your skin this winter:
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! Your skin will thank you for the extra hydration during the colder, drier months. It may be beneficial to use a thicker, cream-based moisturiser as well during this time of year to help retain as much moisture as possible. We recommend La Roche-Posay’s Hydraphase Intense Riche Moisturiser – providing long-lasting moisture, suitable for both sensitive and dry skin types. If your skin is needing an extra boost, we also recommend the Dr Hauschka Hydrating Cream Mask - the perfect remedy if your skin is feeling dry, sensitive and in need of regeneration.
Use a gentle, cream-based cleanser. This will remove any dirt or make-up from the skin while also having a soothing and hydrating effect on the skin. We recommend using CeraVe’s Hydrating Facial Cleanser – a creamy cleanser that reinforces the skin’s natural barrier to help lock in moisture.
Cover up. When you venture out into the cold, always button up with a warm coat, scarf, gloves and hat to help protect yourself and your skin.
Wear sun cream year-round. Even though you may not feel the sun this time of the year, it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Skingredients’ Skin Shield is a non-greasy, lightweight moisturising SPF that provides protection against UVA + UVB rays.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Drinking water helps to keep you hydrated from the inside out and can have great effects on the skin.
Protect your hands and lips. When outdoors in the winter, these are the most venerable and usually uncovered parts of our body. We recommend La Roche-Posay’s Ciciplast Hands Baume and Cicaplast Lips Baume to help rehydrate and protect. If you looking to give your hands a little extra TLC, Seoulista’s Rosy Hands Instant Manicure is an anti-ageing treatment created by dermatologists. The serum-infused gloves leave hands feeling smooth, youthful and deeply replenished with a delicate scent.
Avoid extremely long, hot showers or baths. This can irritate sensitive skin and can lead to even more moisture loss.
During the winter because your skin barrier is already compromised due to the dry and cold weather, it’s important not to over-exfoliate your skin - once a week is fine. Look for a scrub that is gentle on the skin with natural exfoliants to help remove any dry, flaky skin. Green Angel’s Seaweed & Apricot Facial Scrub contains organic Irish seaweeds (packed with vitamins and minerals), Apricot kernel oil (contains vitamin A and E) and natural Soya oil (with natural antioxidants which helps to soften the skin).
Take care of your feet. The winter months can lead to dry, cracked heels and feet. Gently exfoliate (with a pumice stone or roller, like Scholl’s Velvet Smooth Pedi) and moisturise regularly (try Eucerine’s Urea Repair Plus Foot Cream) to help keep your feet in tip top shape. Try a humidifier. Humidifiers add moisture to the air inside your home. This helps to keep your skin hydrated. These are ideal if you have wood fire heating in your home.
