We asked our skincare expert Lisa (Instagram @lisabeautybasics), from our Gorey Shopping Centre store to share some tips and advice on how to take care of your skin during the summer months. Find out more below.
Summer is finally here, and the weather has been good to us so far. One thing that tends to need a little more attention in the summer months is our skincare routine. The skin needs different things at different times of the year, and it is important to adjust our skincare routine to suit the warmer, more humid months ahead.
SPF is a key component to any summer skincare routine. SPF sunscreen helps protect us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays: UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning). It is long-term exposure to UVA rays that causes sun damage to the skin’s thickest layer, the dermis, which results in fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and hyperpigmentation.
Our Skincare Recommendations
Oxidative stress breaks down collagen, hinders the skin’s natural repair process and triggers inflammation. These effects can appear as fine lines, wrinkles, loose skin, acne breakouts and a blotchy skin tone. We recommend adding some super ingredients to your routine, which help to detoxify the skin:
For Vitamin C, we recommend: Pestle & Mortar Vitamin C serum or La Roche Posay C10 serum. La Roche Posay Effaclar serum - it contains Niacinamide or Vichy Slow Age, which contains Resveratrol.
For Vitamin E we recommend: Vichy’s Liftactiv range or Pestle & Mortar Superstar Retinol.
Your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells every 30 days or so. By exfoliating regularly, you are helping to speed up the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. It helps to keep the skin silky smooth.
To exfoliate the whole body, a gentle scrub or a warm, wet washcloth will get the job done. You could also try chemical exfoliating with the use of BHAs or AHAs, which help to get rid of dead skin without any rough scrubbing. Pestle & Mortar lead the way with Exfoliate and NMF, both products are must-haves as part of any skincare routine.
Healthy Skin Food
We recommend you eat foods to help your skin from within by adding these foods to your diet this summer:
- Carrots, apricots, and other yellow and orange fruits and vegetables. Spinach and other green leafy vegetables.
- Tomatoes, berries, beans, peas, and lentils.
- Salmon, mackerel, other fatty fish, and nuts.
Drinking at least 2 litres of water a day will also greatly benefit both your skin and your body. Our skin is the largest organ in our body and one of the last to reap the benefits of your water intake.
