Skingredients – Interview with Jennifer Rock

We were delighted to have the opportunity to chat with CEO and founder of The Skin Nerd and Skingredients, Jennifer Rock at the launch of this exciting new skincare range.

Can you tell us about Skingredients?

Skingredients is a skincare collection formulated with ingredients that are clinically-proven to nourish, protect and maintain your skin, for all humans and all ages. It’s the skin version of a balanced dinner plate, with the right amount of everything you need.

You know that you need to get protein, good fats, probiotics and vitamins into your diet – so why wouldn’t your skin need them too?

How did you go about creating this range?

It’s taken two years to get it to where it is now. I suppose it’s through being a facialist for 14 years I’ve realised what people want and what they don’t want.

What I noticed is that people really wanted things like sheet masks and toners and masks, but they’re not really the answer. They need the core ingredients for your skin to make it healthy, and that’s what then lead to it being on your shelves!

Who is this product ideal for?

Everybody! So, we’ve actually trade marked the words ‘all hoomans’, so ‘hoomans’ means humans so it doesn’t matter if you’re a man, woman, 12 or 92, it’s just health. So, the same way we should all eat broccoli and have our veg, and our carbs and our proteins and our fats, that’s exactly what this is for your skin.

The Core Four are just to make the skin as healthy as possible, and then the mix and match are what you kind of tweak and add in as you feel you need it for a specific skin type, whether you’re oily or dry or dehydrated or whatever it might be.

I notice on the Core 4 packaging there are numbers. How does that work?

One of the most commonly asked questions I get asked all the time at events, on the radio, on TV is do I cleanse first? Do I put my SPF on last, or what?

So, I wanted to try make it as simple as possible, so 1, 2, 3, 4 literally means the order in which you use it. However, you don’t have to have all four, if finances don’t allow it or if you’re already in love with your own cleanser, you slot in your own products in that regime. But it is designed to make it really easy for people to understand what to do and when to use it. If you can count to 4, you got this!

Also, the packaging is quite colourful! Was there any reason behind that?

We like colour in Nerd HQ!

Again, a lot of clients would say to me “Oh I use the blue product” and there could be 50 blue products! So, I want to try and make the range really colourful with one product per colour, so that someone could say I’m using the orange one and I know immediately “Oh they’re talking about our SPF”. They don’t have to remember the names or anything, just the colour or the number and it’s the simplest way to identify what they’re using and then to give them the best advice on how to use it.

What are the benefits of a pre-serum like your Skin Veg?

This is a great question! Pre-serum is a concept from Jade Beauty. It’s also known as an essence. It’s basically a water soluble or water- based product that really hydrates your skin.

It helps lock in so much moisture - there’s an ingredient in there that actually allows whatever you put on next, be it Skingredients or any other brand to work better.

There’s a really gentle polyhydroxy ingredient that just allows the next product to get in that bit further. Plus, it makes your skin really smooth, there’s nothing to not love!

With it being summer time, can you share with us your top tips for protecting your skin during the warmer weather?

SPF obviously is always going to be a key, but don’t see SPF as the only thing. It’s not a guarantee that it will protect you all the time.

So, make sure you avoid skin exposure from 12 ‘til 2, keep your hats on, keep well covered and hydrated.

I also love a spritz and I love a sheet mask - I think it’s really important to look after yourself inside and power all the antioxidants into you because the sun is a free radical that damages our skin.
