Other tips to protect children on the return to school

  • Encourage regular hand washing to prevent infection.

  • Encourage them to cover their mouths when coughing to reduce the spread of airbourne germs.

  • Encourage them to dispose of any used tissues in the appropriate bins.

  • Keep some hand sanitiser gel in their school bags to use on their hands throughout the day.

  • Always ensure children have a breakfast and a healthy packed lunch – nutrition is the best way to support their immune systems and help with concentration during the school day. Remember to include fruit and veg to make up the recommended 7 a day for a balanced diet.

  • Ensure all vaccines are scheduled and up to date.

  • If your child has any allergies make sure you let the school know ie: peanut allergy may require the school to keep an adrenaline pen on site for administration in case of emergency.

  • If your child has Asthma ensure you have a spare inhaler for their school bag and inform the teacher.

  • Check with the school regarding policies in place if your child needs to take medication during the school day - it may be important that they do not miss a dose of their medication during this time. Your pharmacist can advice you on any medication questions you may have at this time.

  • Check school bags or with your child daily for any correspondence from the school ie: a letter to say there is headlice or an illness circulating in the school. Often schools provide advice in these situations to help protect your child from exposure to such situations.

  • Encourage good sleep routines – most healthy children need up to ten hours sleep a night and this need decreases with age. Sleep is as important as diet and exercise.

  • Encourage children to engage in physical activity after school to combat the effects of sitting all day at school. Exercise helps them maintain a healthy weight, helps relieve stress and tension and will aid better sleep.

Anyone can get headlice and contrary to belief they are not associated with dirty hair. Below are some tips to prevent and treat headlice and some suggested products to help you deal with headlice.

Headlice Advice
  • Regular fine combing is encouraged to help with detection – use a fine comb or the V-vomb for regular checking of the hair.

  • Use repellents to keep the lice away daily– we suggest using Lyclear Head lice repellent or Nitty Gritty or tea Tree products.

  • Keep long hair tied up in a bun so as there is less risk of contamination.

  • Only those individuals with active head lice infestation should be treated.

  • Inform the school if your child has head lice – by doing this they can encourage other parents to treat their children and eliminate the problem successfully.

  • If a treatment option fails to work (after re-treating with the same product 7 days apart) ALWAYS switch to an alternative product.
